What does "up to standard" mean?
The Minimum
An entry is up to standard when someone who is not aware of the written subject can read it and comprehend what happened.
Be Specific
A vague entry is worse than no entry: it takes the title, so the next person who could have written it properly finds the page already occupied.
It is a general rule of thumb, when describing events, to follow the 5Ws and 1H:
- Who (if applicable) was involved?
- What was the issue?
- When did it take place?
- Where did it take place?
- Why did it happen?
- How did it happen?
Keeping Impartial
Write what you saw. If somebody told you, say so (reportedly, by their own account, according to) and mark it as satire if it is a joke rather than a claim. An entry that states hearsay as fact is the kind that gets reported, and the report is usually right.
Quotes are verbatim or they are not quotes. If you remember the shape but not the words, describe it instead of inventing the sentence.
Do not write about your own opinions, or about rumors on an issue.
Structure
Use the given layout preset for people. The sections the guidelines name, and the categories that already exist. An entry that invents its own headings for what every other entry calls Quotes and Controversy & Incidents increases discrepancy, making it harder to read as a whole.
Leaving a field blank is fine.
Quality > Quantity
A three-sentence entry that is true and specific is up to standard. A long entry padded with filler is not, and padding to move the word count is the one thing Housekeeping singles out as pointless.
Do not delete a short entry for being short. Add to it.
What If My Writing is Substandard?
Most under par writing will likely get fixed rather than removed. This is what an open wiki is for, and it is faster than arguing.
Removal is for things fixing cannot reach: an entry about somebody who has asked not to be here, a remark written to hurt, an invented quotation. Those go through the routes in Housekeeping. Report any when found.
Reverting is for vandalism and for edits that make an entry less true. It is not for edits you disagree with stylistically. If you preferred your wording, edit it again and state why in the description.
Checks
There is no queue, no proposal and no approval. Being able to publish the moment you press save implies everything here is someone's responsibility afterwards, including entries you did not write.
If you read something below standard and you can fix it, you are the quality control this encyclopedia has.
See How to Write an Entry for how to write one, and Housekeeping for what happens to it afterwards.
Happy Writing!
